Killed in Action on Tuesday 5th February 1918

Born in Ickleton on 15th October 1898 [Linton 3b:480], baptised 12 December to Frederick and Fanny SHIPP (née ELDRED), of Railway Crossing, Mill Street, Ickleton.

1901 census...George [2] was at Railway Crossing, Ickleton with his father Frederick [39] a railway platelayer born Bishops Stortford, his mother Fanny [41] railway gate keeper born Hallingbury, and his brother Frederick [17] a railway clerk, born Bishops Stortford.

1911 census...George [12] was with his parents (father now a sub inspector on railway) at Zurich Cottage, Deans Road (off Granby Street), Newmarket. Two of his siblings had died.


11th Middlesex were part of 36th Brigade in 12th (Eastern) Division. In June 1915 they arrived in Boulogne. They were disbanded,in France, 2 days after George's death, which was their only death that week.

George is buried in Croix du Bac British Cemetery, Steenwerck, Belgium- Ref:I.E.2
